5 Best Scientific Calculators For Students

In fact, a scientific calculatoris necessary once you have moved beyond basic math courses. If you're doing higher school or college math classes, it's nearly mandatory!

Fortunately that the scientific calculator I'm suggesting in this review (the Casio FX-991EX) is very affordable, and also of good quality.

1. Casio FX-991EX ClassWiz

I am immediately completely in love with the calculator. For me , who is a visual learner , this was the perfect. It has a significantly improved size screen resolution that its predecessor (4 times faster than model ESmodel) which allowed Casio to design a more appealing menu experience. It can also do 4x4 matrices. That's an improvement from the old 3x3 in the earlier model.

I like how it is able to create graphic representations of integrals, differences, etc. - again, this really helps me as a visual learner.

I also think using the Excel function superior to nothing else in the scientific calculator range.

Why This Calculator:

  • Rapid:Really quick processing speed.
  • Extremely VisualAs I am a visual person I am awestruck the fact that this calculator comes with clear visual menus, spreadsheet function as well as graphic representations of integrals, differentials, etc.
  • QR Code to generate graphs:It's a clever idea to be capable of scanning the QR code from your smartphone to create graphs using this calculator (it also means that you can use it as a graphing calculator at times). However, I think there are a few flaws in this: first when you've got your smartphone so why not connect to a site to create graphs in the first place? Then, if you're going to be making graphs regularly in class, you really should invest in a graphing calculator!
  • Low-cost:I really do think you're getting value here. It's absurd to think that you'll get an inexpensive calculator for $10 when you can get this amazing scientific calculator for not all that much more is ridiculous.

Keep In Mind:

  • The shortcut for no engineering symbolOne thing that really irritates to me in this Casio is that you have to open the menu every time you want to generate an engineering symbols.
  • Wipes memory when turned off':It frustrates me that if I disable it, all memory of recent calculations is erased.

2. Sharp EL-W516TBSL 16-Digit Advanced

The variety of functions on this calculator allows it to be a very versatile piece of technology. It's perfect for a student who knows they will be doing many calculations, however hasn't yet declared their major until now - as you can use it in several different classes.

Why This Calculator:

  • Playback with Intuitive:I enjoy the playback feature where you are able to make edits to mistakes you've made during the calculation, without having to restart the entire process.
  • large 4 line display:The displays on this device are by far the best of the Sharp EL range of calculators.
  • A plethora of functions:You can cover just all the functions you can imagine on this calculator. It's good for many (nearly all) non-graphing calculations that you'd like to carry out.

Keep In Mind:

  • Cost:My guess is that many of my readers will prefer a simpler calculator which will probably accomplish the task.

3. Texas Instruments TI-36X Pro

A very popular calculator that's one of the top items used in college classes. You'll never be far from a fellow instructor or student who knows how to navigate it, which is ideal for minimizing the learning curve. It's also typically accepted for all exams, which means this calculator will see you through the majority of highschool and possibly your college degree. This is a reliable machine in no time.

Most effective for Geometry, Physics, Statistics, Calculus, Algebra and Engineering.

Why This Calculator:

  • Price:It comes in at an affordable price that won't cost you a fortune (click image to check the current price on Amazon)
  • A Safe BetProfessors often limit calculators allowed in their tests to one or two select groups of calculators. This is typicallyone of the most common types you'll find on an 'exam certified' calculator list.
  • SAT, ACT, AP, FE/PE Exam Approved(*):It's permitted in a variety of standard tests (at an earlier date). I'd recommend checking your exam's current advice in case this changes.
  • Superb Display:I love that the four-line display shows calculations the way you'd look at them on paper, making it easier to comprehend and read.

Keep In Mind:

  • slow:I've observed that it's significantly slower than Casio fx-991EX.

4. HP 35s Scientific Calculator

There are some serious extremely rusty HP enthusiasts out there. One of the main reasons for this is the robust feel and logic of HP calculators. (Note: Personally I'm not a Texas Instruments person, but I like HP style).

This calculator is also accepted for numerous SAT, ACT, AP and PSAT exams (see the notes under 'Why this calculator under 'why this calculator?').

Another advantage of HP calculators , is that they've adhered to the option of RPN input which is very effective if you are able to use it. It's optional on this calculator. So even if you don't need to make use of it - don't worry using the standard algebraic method too.

Most effective to teach Engineering, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics.

  • Logical LayoutI feel the buttons are logically placed here, making it easy to do the calculations you need once you've done a bit of practice.
  • Old HP Feel from the School of:Old HP calculators have a great solid feel to them, and this one replicates the feel pretty well (not exactly, but definitely enough).
  • SAT, PSAT, AP & ACT Test Certified*:It's permitted on multiple SAT tests including the Reasoning Test and Mathematics Levels 1 and 2. It's also suitable for the ACT math test, PSAT/NMSQT, and AP Chemistry & Physics. Make sure to check the details before purchasing as this information is only correct as of the date of publication.
  • RPN option:For the hardcore among the rest of us, HP is known for keeping Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) alive through many of its calculators. RPN is a really popular alternative to the logic of algebraic entry systems and I am awestruck the fact that you can select among RPN and algebraic when you choose this option. If your Prof wants you to use RPN it is a good choice of calculator.

5. Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView

Here is the official Calculator of the GED tests and I'd suggest students who are studying for the GEDs purchase this calculator as soon as possible.

If you're not a mathematician it's a great base calculator for elementary high school mathematics. If however, you're doing engineering, calculus, physics or computer science I'd recommend upgrading to the TI-36X Pro reviewed above. I'd also suggest that this model isn't equipped with enough features to see you through all the way through the college years, which is why I recommend this model for students in high school.

The best use for Statistics, Algebra, General Math, Geometry and Biology.

Why This Calculator:

  • GED Certification:This is the only GED certified calculator that you can use in the GED test. You're basically enticed to purchase this. It's a straightforward, user-friendly and reliable calculator. You'll be permitted to use it for the e Social Studies, Science and Section 2 of the Mathematical Reasoning tests.
  • Cheap:It's really cheap for the cost of a scientific calculator. But remember - it'll be sufficient to get you through the basic stuff, but nothing much more. You'll grow out of it by college.

Keep In Mind:

  • It's a thing you'll outgrow:In college Physics and Engineering courses you'll find you require a calculator that has more options for calculation like the TI 36X Pro.

6. Casio Fx-115ES PLUS

This is a decent base calculator but I'm not able to justify using it in the context of how the Casio fx-991EX is so much superior at a price comparable to.

My Rating: 5/10

It's an excellent basic calculator for high school or middle school student. It will perform the basics calculations needed to get through the math classes in high school. But when it comes to specializing in geometric, financial, or calculus topics, this one just won't make the cut unfortunately.

The top draw card that this one comes with, though, is the great cost. I'd recommend it to my Grade 7 son because it's perfect for now and doesn't cost anything.

Most suitable for high school general math.

Why This Calculator:

  • Incredibly cheap:It's just about the most affordable calculator you can purchase. Great for younger students who don't deal with it in the best way in the first place.
  • Very Nice Button SpacingBecause the buttons aren't as numerous, they're very well spaced apart and it feels as if you have plenty of space to type.

Keep In Mind:

  • The Basics:This is the type of calculator that you'll receive if you're looking to save lots of money ... but you'll be getting an extremely basic calculator. If you're in the field of math or science it's not the right choice for you.
  • Don't Expect it to last:Many online reviews have reported that the product broke shortly after. Remember this when purchasing.

When selecting an scientific calculator, you need to keep in mind what it's allowed to use for exams you'll be taking (if you're in college, you can ask your professor). Some exams have extremely strict rules regarding which calculators will be allowed and which ones aren't.

2. Price Point - Don't Get The Cheap One!

Another aspect to consider is the cost. If I were you, I wouldn't go with one of the cheaper $100 models. With just a bit more (still under $50) you can purchase an amazing calculator with excellent specs. The slight price increase is accompanied by a massive increase in the quality. You'll be able to do numerous functions and calculations, and the device will see you through a lot more classes at high school and up to college.

3. There Will Be A Learning Curve

If you choose to switch from one brand to another, you will be a learning curve . Many users prefer to choose one brand and stick to it. However, I'm generally a Texas Instruments user ... but the Casio FX-991EX is so easy to use I was forced to pick the brand I prefer here.

My top pick for the most efficient scientific calculator for students is the Casio FX-991EX ClassWiz. It's got a great range of functions, is great for a visual learner, and is lightning-fast. I'm also awed by the price - and I'm a fan. I'm not too enthused about the TI-36X Pro either, but I do think that Casio takes the clear lead when it comes to the top scientific calculator category.
