Two adults of the same height are not likely to weigh the exact same. This is because body weight is dependent on factors like bone structure (small, medium or larger frame) and the proportion of body fat as compared to greater muscle.
Body Mass Index ( BMI) determines your weight in relation to your height. This can be a useful indicator of whether your weight is in the middle, above or below an acceptable range.
BMI is calculated by:
- Dividing the weight(kg) by your height(m)
- Divide the answer by your height(m) and again to calculate your BMI
If your BMI is higher than 25, then you fall into the overweight category. If your weight rises above an acceptable range, elevated body fat levels are associated with a higher risk of developing health problems such as increased blood pressure elevated LDL cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes cardiac disease and stroke and some types of cancer. A BMI that is lower than 18.5 is considered to be overweight and, if the lower body weight is a result of restricted food intake or an insufficient intake of nutrients is probable.
Are the results always reliable? It's important to understand that BMI is not a definitive reference for healthy weight ranges and health risks for adults. It's never able to reveal the full picture. People who have higher proportions of muscle, such as bodybuilders and athletes, may be incorrectly classified as overweight. In the same way, people with small frames and lesser muscle mass, which includes the elderly and certain people from ethnic groups, could be classified as being a healthy weight, even though they carry excess weight for their body kind. BMI can be a better indicator of health status when it is paired in conjunction with the Waist-Hip Ratio which measures where the body fat is distributed.
